Education, Equality & Empowerment

Households here move for work, and a child's schooling breaks with every move — or ends altogether, because the family needs another wage. Two programmes run against that: learning-assistance classes that restart a child's education wherever it stopped, and a course that asks adolescent boys to think again about what they owe the girls and women around them.

સમસ્યા

When work moves, education gets left behind.

Seasonal migration can disrupt children's schooling, while financial pressure may push some children into work to support their families. Without consistent learning support, a temporary interruption can become long-term disengagement from education.

For girls, the barriers can be even greater. Social norms often place limits on their education, mobility, time and choices, while unequal responsibilities and acceptance of violence further restrict their opportunities.

Every child deserves the chance to stay in school, complete their education and shape their own future — regardless of where they live, what their family earns, or whether they are a girl or a boy.

Every child deserves the chance to catch up.

Through our Centre for Learning Assistance, we provide supplementary learning support to children who have fallen behind or experienced gaps in their education. Learning Assistants first understand what each child already knows and where they need support, then work with them in small groups alongside regular school.

We focus on helping children strengthen basic learning, rebuild confidence and stay connected to school — so a learning gap does not become a reason to leave education behind.

Teach the child, not only the syllabus

Learning is more than reading, writing and mathematics. Our Learning Assistants create space for children to explore, create and express themselves through engaging activities held once or twice a month.

Children turn everyday materials into crafts, make leaf art, birdhouses and rakhis, experiment with finger painting, draw and write their own ideas, create and present stories, and perform rhymes with actions.

These activities help children discover their creativity, build confidence and express their ideas — while making learning something they enjoy and want to return to.

Work with the adolescents who become future leaders

Gender equality starts with the boys who will shape tomorrow.

Through our Foundation and Action programmes, adolescent boys and girls explore gender, rights, relationships, health, violence and masculinity through participatory learning.

In school, not in labour

Every child has the right to be in a classroom, not in the field. We visit schools across our programme villages to raise awareness about child labour and to encourage children to stay in school, learn and complete their education. Through interactive activities, games and competitions we make the message simple and memorable: a child's hands are meant to hold a pencil, not work.

Education and child care has been part of Hariraj Charitable Trust since it was founded in 1993, when the trust’s first activities were primary education and a reproductive and child health programme. The practical response has not changed much: be present in the village, be there over years rather than terms, and work with the child and the household at the same time.

Centre for Learning Assistance

Seasonal migration, child labour and limited learning support can interrupt a child’s education. Our Centre for Learning Assistance provides supplementary support alongside regular schooling, helping children strengthen their learning, rebuild confidence and stay connected to school.

Learning Assistants work with children, parents and school teachers to understand individual learning needs, and provide support through small-group classes, creative activities, stories, games and one-to-one attention.

Gender Education

Equality begins with the next generation. Through the Foundation and Action Course for Equality, adolescents aged 13 to 17 explore gender, rights, relationships, health, violence and masculinity through participatory sessions. The programme encourages adolescents to question harmful gender norms, respect girls, and become positive voices for equality within their families and communities.

The course runs as fifteen modules, one two-hour session a week. The modules cover expectations and human rights, gender and gender equality, adolescent change, sex and sexuality, sexuality and health, and violence and masculinity. Several sessions have been filmed and published in Gujarati on the trust’s YouTube channel.

Why this partnership. Equal Community Foundation provides the educational support and course material for the programme. Hariraj has the local reach and the experience of working with children in these villages. Each side supplies what the other lacks.

Child Development Centre — a past programme

The Child Development Centre, implemented with CottonConnect, supported children in cotton-growing communities, particularly children affected by migration and child labour.

The centre provided learning support, recreation, sports, creative activities, nutritious meals and health check-ups, while helping children who had dropped out reconnect with education.

The programme has now concluded, with several of its approaches continuing through our Centre for Learning Assistance.
